So I started writing this review when Titanfall 2 was going through Multiplayer Beta, which I had a cheeky go of. I thought I'd share some views on my trial and the original Titanfall (which is available on EA Access).
To begin with, I had no idea that Titanfall was a purely multiplayer game. I've got nothing against pure multiplayer games, but I wish I'd known. Each mission I play through the "campaign" presupposes I have some inkling of what's going on and the "story" that I'm following. I'm good with storylines, I love convoluted plots. But seriously throwing storylines around willy-nilly in a purely multiplayer game is not cool.
As has been highlighted to me on my continuing plays, the main issue with pure multiplayer games is the fact that they rely entirely on the network connection to the server and the developers' servers. This has been my biggest issue with the game so far. At points I've been stuck in walls, bouncing back "rubber banding" to a position I'd moved from 2-5 seconds previously. This is a huge hindrance with the multiplayer aspect of the game, and I know my connection is fine.
I have been thoroughly enjoying the gameplay when it's not glitchy though. The graphics are good and the Titans are pretty cool to play with, adding in a great gameplay feature and levels to the combat. Jumping in and out of a behemoth Titan or through small corridors as the pilot gives you a fluid and varied game, making each play that little bit different from the last.
I'm seriously considering a purchase of Titanfall 2 IF they guarantee that the lag issues have been dealt with from the original Titanfall, as right now I'm coming back for the gameplay elements but being deterred by the crappy server connection.
